Overton Village Weather Station

Anemometer

Measures wind speed and direction.

It is mounted on the chimney so that it is not sheltered from the wind in any direction.

Sends information to console by a solar powered wireless link.

Anemometer

Wind speed is measured by the speed at which the wind blows the cup around.

Wind direction is measured by the weather vane.

Thermo - hygrometer

Measures air temperature and humidity.

It is enclosed in a passive radiation shield so that the sun is not able to shine directly on the sensor and mounted on the garage roof so the air flows around the sensor by passing between the white plates. White reflects the sunlight to prevent heating of the temperature sensor from causing a false reading..

Sends information to console by a solar powered wireless link.

Rain gauge

This collects rain through a funnel and passes it on to the sensor.

Sends information to console by a solar powered wireless link.

Rain gauge interior

The sensor is a tilting bucket. As rain runs from the funnel it fills the bucket. When enough rain has filled the bucket the weight of the rain makes the bucket flip down. The empty bucket now starts filling and the full bucket is emptied. The green electronic circuit counts each time the buckets flip down.

Baro – thermo – hygrometer

This measures atmospheric pressure as well as the indoor temperature and humidity. Sends information to console by a  wireless link.

Weather console.

This receives all the information from the remote sensors by radio.

It converts the atmospheric pressure to sea level – the weather station is 100m above sea level. This means that the pressure can then be directly compared with that from other weather stations.

The console displays the information and sends the data to a computer which in turn sends the information to a web server. The information can then be seen on the village website by anyone, anywhere in the world, with access to the web.
